In January 2020 two months before the Covid 19 outbreak, founder Naima Akbar met with a group of like minded women and formed Sisters of Salaam to discuss issues concerning faith, health, family, youth and food insecurity. We were women who wanted to make a difference in underserved communities by instilling "Hope". Once New York, went into lockdown it was understood there was a need to maintain connections with each other and our community to help alleviate lonelines. In an effect to support each other and build community, Sisters of Salaam began having monthly workshops via Zoom titled, Mental Health Matters: Covid 19 & Beyond, How to Transition Successfully from High School/College to a Career, Domestic Violence Awareness and Resources, Aromatherapy 101, Black History and Stock Investing.
Since the inception of Sisters of Salaam we have also hosted and/or participated in Free Food Giveaways, Community Clean Ups, Breast Cancer Walks, Voter Registration Drives, Food, Bookbag and Hygiene giveaways, Weekly Walking for Wellness, Books and Breakfast -for children and provided hot meals monthly to a senior residence in Mount Vernon, NY. We have additionally, hosted children on various trips outside of their community.
Sisters of Salaam has had many accomplishments and challenges as an organization. In 2022 due to the devastating effects of Covid 19 and other circumstances which led Sister Naima to reevaulate the organization and to reimagine how to instill hope and support in the communities served. Including the importance of always having the "best character" which is extremely important in our Islamic faith.
This led us to start "United Upon Tawheed" which includes; the Dawah Program, Islamic Conferences, support groups "Brother for Brother" and "Striving Muslim Sistas" and "Striving Muslim Sistas Book Club". Sisters of Salaam is learning to embrace the challenges, redefine what "hope" means for us today and how to work hard to make a difference in underserved communities.
The mission of Sisters of Salaam is to empower and support, men, women, children by leading with compassion, providing resources, advocacy and referral services while upholding the dignity and respect for each person regardless of their race or religion.
